Owairaka Athletics Day!

Kia Ora Bloggers,

On Tuesday the 3rd of November, Puriri and Kauri team went on a very tiring trip to Lovelock Track!

There was a lot of athletic activities, my most favourites were Long Jump and Discus but one of my most least is High Jump..

The girls went racing on the track first and the boys tried all the events, I only did the 100 and 200 metres because I would be too exhausted to do the 400 metres (the whole track) and the 800 metres (run around the whole track 2 times).

After, the boys went to the track and the girls had a turn at the activities, 

We first did Discus and the discus was much lighter than I thought. Next was Long Jump, me and my friends were watching the boys race and see who came 1st place while we were waiting for our turn. Then it was shot put, the ball was so heavy! It was pretty hard trying to push a very heavy ball.. Now,it was High Jump. I was so scared to do this cause I'm really short and the beam was much higher than I thought. I tried it but I hit my knee so I just watched instead!

Lastly, all the classes sat on the grass and called the people that are racing for the relay team. AND I was one of them.. Sadly one of our members in our relay team had a sore knee so that's why we came 4th place! FINALLY, we all packed our bags and walked back to school!

BLAKE NZ-VR (Threats to the Oceans)

Today Room 8 went to BLAKE NZ-VR. We learned more about the threats in the ocean. We were all so excited to put on the VR headsets! We saw some fishes and the ocean, we saw different parts of Hauraki Gulf. Some of them had tons of fish and was a really clear, healthy ocean.  Sadly, many parts of the Hauraki Gulf have been overfished and extremely unhealthy!                                                                                          

After we've learned about the threats in the ocean we got to see some bonus videos with some fishes swimming around us. One sting ray hit the camera! What interesting fact(s) do you know about the ocean?

Growth Mindest

Room 8 has been learning about brains and that your brain is a muscle! Did you know the human brain weighs 3 pounds? What interesting fact(s) do you know about the brain? Here is my Google Slide I made about the human brain!

How We Hear! - Animation

Kia Ora! We have been learning all about sound in Room 8. Here is my Animation about sounds travelling in waves and how we hear. Did you know that there is a cochlea in our ear that is shaped like a snail and is full of liquid? Inside are hairs that change the vibrations into electrical signals that go to the brain. How cool is that? Watch my animation to learn more. Enjoy!

Science Week!

Room 8 did some science this week! We put baking soda and damp rid in vinegar. When we sealed the plastic bag it started filling up with gas and it popped! We also tried to make a little light bulb work! Here is some pictures that we did in science. What is your favourite science experiment? Leave me a comment below.

Dear Carla,

I am very sorry for throwing the book at you. It was a really great gift that you gave me. I was very upset that you were leaving and I will miss you so much!

I’d like to apologise for not coming on Friday and Saturday. I was really mad and super upset but I hope I can meet you again.

I promise not to rip anything up again, and thank you for giving the book report to Mrs. Ebbel. She said it was wonderful and gave me a GOLD star! It was more shiny than the other gold stars. Again, thank you for sticking up for me whenever I needed you.

I did go to Colleen’s birthday party, I ate a bit too much cake and when I went home I vomited in the sink! We all danced and played some activities. I wish you were there to have a great time with me.

Thank you so much for being on my side every time. I hope I can meet you again, I appreciate everything that you do for me.

Bradleys Monster

Kia Ora everybody! Today Room 8 was reading a book called "There's a Boy in the Girls Bathroom!" By Louis Sachar. There was a part where Carla was telling Bradley that all monsters have good in them. Bradley described his monster and said " Green skin, one eye on the middle of his face, 3 arms, 2 hands on each arm and 8 fingers on each hand. " But to show the good in his monster he added a red heart.

My Pancake Journey

Kia Ora everyone!

I hope everyone have had a safe and happy time during isolation. So I have decided to share you guys what I have made recently with the help of my sister :)

28th of March was my dad's birthday, so I've made pancakes for him (since we couldn't get out to buy him a proper birthday cake)

Beneath the Surface

He looked down. There was still such a long way to go… His heart started beating as fast as a race car, his fingers started shivering. When they lowered him down, splash! A piece of pebble fell into the waterfall and made an echo through the dark cave. His hands were throbbing while holding on the rope. Thud! His sore fingers slipped in the breezy shallow water! “Brrrr…”  He put his flashlight on and weakly ran to the dark mysterious cave. Then, a thump started coming closer and closer. It was a… a hungry lion! The lion started leaping across the cave to rip him apart! Unexpectedly, a helicopter threw a ladder down the waterfall and he quickly climbed up. The lion started tearing up the ladder and his foot got jammed! The helicopter started going up, flying him away safely and the lion fell down into the waterfall and hit his head onto a gigantic rock. Crash! He died.

Kupe

Kupe

History tells us that Kupe was a brave, clever explorer that sailed all across the Pacific Ocean and discovered New Zealand.  He drowned his cousin to marry his wife, Kura. He sailed in a waka from Hawaiiki to New Zealand and fought a humongous octopus who crashed into the waka.

He was from Hawaiiki and his family included his wife, Hine-Te-Aparangi and his 2 daughters, Matiu and Makaro.

I think he wasn't a great leader because he desired his cousin's wife, Kura and he got jealous so drowned him into the sea and he already had a wife, Hine-Te-Aparangi. I think that he would always put himself first and not other people. A good leader needs to look after everyone first and you need to be able to trust them with your life.

Howick Historical Village

 Hello, on Thursday room 8 went to Howick Historical Village. We tried to pretend we were in the 1850's! We learnt about how to communicate with morse code and flag semaphore. We learned how to have manners in the olden days. It was super fun!


















On our next activity we went to school! it was super fun. until the teacher came.. girls and boys weren't allowed to sit together! The teacher was very strict but funny! We had to learn songs, maths and try to write in cursive letters! The teacher only wanted it to be "PERFECT!" It was more harder than we normally do it..

On our last activity, we learnt what children would play in the olden days. Some of the toys were very delicate. But they were all fun and tricky! My favourite was the skipping rope.


After that, we had one adult to explore in the village. There were so many houses! But some of them had a red rope across it so we couldn't get through. Finally we ate some lunch and went back to Owairaka School in a bus. When we got back we were all exhausted! What would be your favourite activity if you were there?
